Tips for a Speedy Post-Op Recovery

Your doctor may recommend or order that you have thyroid surgery if you are experiencing serious problems with your thyroid gland. Your thyroid gland is the producer of the thyroid hormone, which regulates metabolism and performs other important bodily functions. It also regulates other hormones in your body.

Typical serious thyroid gland problems that can lead to the need for surgery include hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and Hashimoto's disease. (Get more tips for thyroid surgery recovery here.)

After your operation, you may have a small tube protruding from the area operated upon. This is designed to allow any important fluids to dry out of the area operated upon. The tube can be removed within 24-72 hours, depending upon the level of fluids that continue to drip from the tube.

You may experience some neck tension in your area, as well as general tenderness in the area that has been operated on. It is extremely important to give yourself plenty of rest during the days after surgery. Before your surgery takes place you may benefit from taking care of as many of your personal and business affairs as you can so that you can give yourself time to rest. Also, try guided meditation as a way to heal your body, mind and spirit more quickly after surgery so that you can get back to doing the things you love.
